Since 2009, Wilfred and Susan Hoath have been vermicomposting on their worm farm in Fort Nelson, BC. It is here they formed their business - Northern Rockies Vermicompost Ltd. In the cold Northern climate of Fort Nelson temperatures can dip as low as -40C, which creates a challenge for traditional methods of vermicomposting. Through trial and error, Wilf formed a method of vermicompost that can be achieved year-round in all climates which has two patents in the USA and a patent-pending in Canada as well.

Northern Rockies Vermicompost Ltd has been working with the town of Fort Nelson to compost cardboard, paper, and all sorts of perishables to feed their worm farm instead of burying the materials. This process also helps to cut down on their carbon footprint. The town of Fort Nelson has succeeded in composting down unwanted trash to create premium-quality castings. The castings are a wanted commodity and a desirable product for gardens.

Wilf and Susan Hoath formed their business as a green alternative to burying and/or trucking perishable waste. Northern Rockies Vermicompost Ltd works with municipalities to bring their patented, tried-and-true method of vermicompost to their landfills. Worms are also available for sale to individuals looking to try vermicomposting in their own backyards.

Vermicomposting was found to meet Northern Rockies Regional Municipality’s community objectives quite well. In a Northern rural remote community, winters and access to amenities can be challenging. The worms provide for efficient turnover of the organic piles, and ability to process greater quantities of cardboard and paper locally.
